Sybil’s Cottage
THE SYBIL ANDREWS/WALTER MORGAN PROPERTY
The Cottage and the Shed have been saved and the Society is looking forward to work to begin on the new foundation for the Cottage. After that is completed, the old moss covered roof will be replaced. The Campbell River Rotary Club plans to replace the Shed's roof when plans are approved. 2011 will be an exciting year for all parties involved.
The Society plans to post pictures of the renovation progress as soon as it begins. For pictures and detailed information please refer to the City of Campbell River's "The Sybil Andrews Cottage Statement of Significance" and "A Cultural and Heritage Plan for the City of Campbell River".
Sybil Andrews and Walter Morgan resided at their oceanfront cottage in Campbell River from 1947, until each of their respective passing. Below is a poem written by Sybil and a pictorial history of the "property" from 1947, to the present.
Black Rain By Sybil Andrews (As read by Sybil Andrews in the Video "Sybil Andrews and the Art of Linocut")This wilderness Of black green trees Turbulent tides Rotting timber Scrub and uncouth men Toil and rain Black grey rock where the eagle watches Octopus haunted Black carrion birds on the black grey shore Long ropes of olive, black kelp And the stench of tide-piled rotting weed And the sick wet smell of water and wet things And rain Helpless, relentless rain The ravens croak and the sew mew calling |
